How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone – Free & Instant

iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default — a format many apps and websites don't support. Here's how to convert HEIC to JPG quickly and for free.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones running iOS 11 and later. Apple switched to HEIC because it produces files roughly half the size of JPEG at the same visual quality — great for saving storage on your phone.

The problem: HEIC is not universally supported. Many websites, form portals, design tools, and non-Apple apps cannot open HEIC files. Windows doesn't support HEIC without a paid codec. Most online tools only accept JPEG or PNG.

How to Convert HEIC to JPG Online Free

The fastest method — no software, works from any device:

  1. Visit our free HEIC to JPG converter
  2. Upload your HEIC file (drag and drop or click to browse)
  3. Click Process — your file is converted instantly

Change iPhone Camera Settings (Prevent HEIC)

If you want your iPhone to shoot in JPEG instead of HEIC going forward:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible (instead of "High Efficiency")

Your camera will now save photos directly as JPEG. Note this slightly increases photo file sizes since HEIC is more efficient.

How to Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac

If you have a Mac, you can convert without any tool:

  1. Open the HEIC file in Preview (default photo app)
  2. Go to File → Export
  3. Change the format dropdown to JPEG
  4. Choose quality and click Save

For bulk conversion: select multiple HEIC files in Finder → right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image → choose JPEG.

How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

Windows 10/11 does not include native HEIC support. Options:

  • Free online: Use our HEIC to JPG converter — works from any browser without installing anything
  • Microsoft Store: Install "HEIC Image Extensions" (free from Microsoft) to open HEIC in Photos app
  • VLC Media Player: Free, open-source, can view HEIC files

Why HEIC Files Look Better Than JPEG at the Same Size

HEIC uses a more modern compression algorithm (HEVC/H.265) compared to JPEG's DCT algorithm from 1992. At the same visual quality, HEIC files are typically 40–50% smaller. When you convert HEIC to JPEG, the resulting JPG file will be larger than the original HEIC — this is normal and expected.

HEIC vs JPEG: Which Should You Use?

Use HEIC to keep photos on your iPhone. Convert to JPEG before uploading, emailing, or sharing outside the Apple ecosystem.

FAQ

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

The conversion itself adds minimal quality loss if you use a high-quality JPEG setting (80–90). The original HEIC is often of superior technical quality, but the visible difference in a converted JPG at quality 85 is imperceptible to the human eye.

Why can't I upload HEIC to websites?

Most web platforms (government portals, social media, job sites, email) only accept JPEG, PNG, or WebP. HEIC is an Apple-proprietary format not yet widely adopted outside Apple's ecosystem.

Will my AirDropped photos be HEIC?

Yes — AirDrop sends the original HEIC file. The recipient needs a Mac or iPhone to open it natively. For sharing with Windows or Android users, convert to JPEG first.
