How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone and Mac – Free & Instant

iPhone photos save as HEIC by default, but most apps and websites need JPG. Here's how to convert HEIC to JPG on any device — for free.

Why Your iPhone Photos Are HEIC Files

Since iOS 11, iPhones capture photos in HEIC format (High Efficiency Image Container). HEIC files are typically 2x smaller than JPEG at the same quality — great for storage, but a problem when you need to share or upload photos to apps, websites, and services that don't support HEIC.

Common HEIC problems:

  • Windows PCs can't open HEIC without installing a codec
  • Gmail and most email clients don't support HEIC attachments
  • Online forms (visa applications, job portals) require JPG or PNG
  • Social media schedulers and marketing tools often reject HEIC

Method 1: Convert HEIC to JPG Online (Easiest)

The fastest method — works on any device, no software needed.

  1. Transfer your HEIC photo from iPhone to your computer (via AirDrop, iCloud Drive, or USB)
  2. Visit our free HEIC to JPG converter
  3. Drag and drop your HEIC file
  4. Download your converted JPG instantly

No signup required. No size limits on common iPhone photos. Works on Windows, Mac, and Android.

Method 2: Change iPhone Camera Settings to Save as JPG

Stop HEIC files at the source by making your iPhone always save photos as JPEG:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible (instead of High Efficiency)

Your iPhone will now save all new photos as JPG. Note: this uses slightly more storage (JPG files are about 2x larger than HEIC).

Method 3: Use AirDrop to Convert Automatically

When you AirDrop photos to a Mac, iPhone automatically converts HEIC to JPEG if the receiving Mac is running macOS Mojave or later. This is the easiest way to get JPG files on a Mac:

  1. Select photos in your iPhone Photos app
  2. Tap Share → AirDrop → select your Mac
  3. Accept on your Mac — the file arrives as JPEG automatically

This only works with AirDrop. USB transfer and iCloud sync do not auto-convert.

Method 4: Convert on Mac with Preview

If you already have HEIC files on your Mac:

  1. Open the HEIC file in Preview
  2. Go to File → Export
  3. Change the format dropdown to JPEG
  4. Adjust quality if needed, then click Save

Batch converting: Select multiple HEIC files in Finder, right-click → Open With → Preview. Then go File → Export Selected Images to convert all at once.

Method 5: Use Photos App on Mac

macOS Photos also exports as JPG:

  1. Open Photos on Mac
  2. Select the photos you want to convert
  3. File → Export → Export [N] Photos
  4. Set Photo Kind to JPEG, set quality, click Export

How to Transfer HEIC from iPhone to PC

For Windows users, HEIC is the biggest challenge. Best transfer methods:

Via iCloud: Enable iCloud Photos → visit icloud.com → download photos (they auto-convert to JPEG for download)

Via USB: Connect iPhone, open File Explorer, navigate to iPhone → DCIM, copy HEIC files. Then use our HEIC to JPG converter to convert.

Via Email: Email photos to yourself. iOS automatically converts HEIC to JPEG when you email photos from the Photos app.

FAQ

Will converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

The visual difference is minimal at high quality settings. HEIC and JPEG are both compressed formats — converting produces a near-identical result that's imperceptible to the human eye.

Is HEIC the same as HEIF?

Yes — HEIC is Apple's implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard. The file extensions .heic and .heif refer to the same format.

Can I open HEIC on Windows without converting?

Yes — install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store (free). This adds HEIC support to Windows Photos and File Explorer.

How do I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible. Your camera will now save JPG files instead of HEIC.
